BOMGC grew out of Birmingham Open Mat (BOM), a grassroots grappling community founded in 2024. BOM broke down the traditional barriers between clubs, providing a space for passionate grapplers, hobbyists and outsiders to train together with no boundaries. The community quickly grew. Word spread, and grapplers from across the UK and beyond visited BOM, sharing techniques, sparring, and building friendships based on a mutual love of grappling and jiu jitsu. BOM was special because it was for everyone. It didn’t matter if you were gi, or no-gi. It didn’t matter if you were a competitor looking to prepare, a hobbyist wanting a bit more live rolling, or a total beginner taking their first steps into the sport - everyone found a space on the BOM mat.
